The Beautiful Glacial Lakes of Zelengora

more than a year ago
Imagine the scene; the sun is shining at the height of summer, and the sweat is rolling down your back to more sensitive areas as you continue your hike through Zelengora mountain. The views are stunning, but part of you is desperate for a rest, and by a ‘rest’ we mean a ‘sit by a lake with a beer’. Almost out of nothing, one of Zelengora’s eight glacial lakes appears in front of you, a true oasis of magic in a scene of gorgeousness. Don’t forget to pack that beer.

Donje Bare
Located at the foot of Tovarnica, Donje Bare is surrounded by stunning meadows and famously stole of the heart of Uncle Joe himself, Tito, who had a chalet nearby.

Gornji Bare
Just a couple of kilometres from its lower equivalent, Gornji Bare is also surrounded by lush meadows and carries a sense of grace that can’t be faked.

Orlovačko Lake
Almost 1500m above sea level, Orlovačko isn’t the biggest lake in the world but don’t sell this little stunner short.

Kladopoljsko Lake
Not the easiest of the lakes to approach, but Kladopoljsko is of particular interest to fly-fishermen. Well, it is of particular interest to anyone who likes beautiful things too, but that should go without saying.

Kotlaničko Lake
Another little beacon of beauty, Kotlaničko Lake is renowned for being the home of a special type of newt. A big newt fan? Get yourself here, pronto.

Štirinsko Lake
Far and away the biggest of Zelengora’s glacial lakes, Štirinsko Lake is the best when it comes to days spent sat by the water with a few drinks in tow. The lake itself isn’t deep enough for swimming, but we’ve always been ‘sit nearby’ types anyway. Speaking of ‘nearby’, there are plenty of old stećci in the surrounding areas.

Bijelo Jezero
We’re mixing languages now, but never mind. The White Lake is found at 1450m, with the peaks of Orlovac and Trebova nearby.

Crno Jezero
The Black Lake is found 500m north of its white counterpart, and this is about as relaxing as it gets. A fly-fisher’s dream to say the least.
