Exotic flora and fauna abound in this well-kept local zoological/botanical institution, with luscious greenery and an impressive cast of animals from all over the world!
This area was the estate of botanist Dr Johann Gottlieb Schultz, who acquired it in 1797, and was responsible for developing its original garden infrastructure. It would change hands a number of times in the 19th and 20th century, with numerous passionate locals responsible for maintaining it. The studios of the scientific department of the garden were established in the 1950s, and the first animals were brought there in 1965, thanks to Arnbert Sadecki, a Toruń local who had been living in Argentina and had become dealer in exotic beasts! Following political changes in Poland in the 1990s, further investments allowed the Zoobotanical Garden to expand its infrastructure, eventually creating the park as we know it today. In 2012, the garden was revitalised in the style of a ‘country garden’, harking back to the 19th-century golden age of its original look.
In terms of the fauna collection, Toruń's Zoobotanical Garden features animals from all corners of the globe. Notable residents include a red panda, a 40-year-old Himalayan bear, two-toed sloths, lynxes, meerkats, and a tonne of avian bird varieties. Toruń's Zoobotanical Garden is also the first to successfully breed 'Taraje' fishing cats in Poland. Regarding other facilities, they have a playground, a cafe, fast food vendors, a gift shop, and another a gastronomic point open during summer season (April - August).
