Welcome to the region where the mediaeval atmosphere still persists, an area where no fewer than seven of the Fortified Churches of Transylvania were classified as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The story begins in the 12th century when the first Saxon settlers arrived in Transylvania and began to embellish the area with wonderful architectural jewels; churches that until the 15th century had a natural role as the centre o spiritual life. It was also around this time that they began to be fortified, thus becoming symbols of defence against potential invaders.

The representatives of the Saxon community in Romania have named "Discover the Soul of Transylvania" the tourist circuit which includes the 52 churches in the territories of Alba, Brasov, Bistrita-Nasaud, Harghita, Hunedoara, Mures and Sibiu counties.

Although there are more than 150 fortified churches in the area, we have selected the seven more beautiful choices where UNESCO Heritage churches are located: Biertan (Birthalm), Calnic (Kelling), Darjiu (Szekelyderzs), Prejmer (Tartlau), Saschiz (Keisd), Valea Viilor (Wurmloch) and Viscri (Deutschweisskirch).
