Vilnius

Karaite & Tatar Cemetery

Žirnių 15     more than a year ago

Following the destruction in the mid-1960s of the original cemetery in Lukiškės, the former traditional home of the city’s Karaite and Tatar communities, a new cemetery was opened in a remote area in the southern part of Vilnius close to the airport. The graves, marked in an extraordinary mixture of Hebrew (Karaite) and Arabic (Tatar), offer a tantalising insight into the former multicultural makeup of the city. The cemetery's still in use, although the gates are usually locked. Knock on the door of the house immediately to the right and somebody should let you in.
