Museum of Moscow

This supplementary branch of the phenomenally big History of Moscow Museum contains four different exhibitions, whose only unifying theme is the city. One exhibit deals with Moscow town planning and is filled with maps and blue-prints, upstairs in the same building is an exhibit dealing with Moscow during World War II, which somewhat confusingly also has photos from Leningrad and Stalingrad mixed in there. Over in the next building is the really interesting bit - two exhibits covering the people and life of Moscow in the 20th Century. Probably the most turbulent time in the city's history, the collection of photographs and memorabilia cover everything from the revolution, to Yuri Gagarin, Perestroika and up to the present day. Save your energy for this section, it is probably the one part of the museum where you don't feel you are losing out too much by there being a lack of English explanations.
