Severyanin Restaurant is aptly named. “Severyanin” comes from the word sever (North), referring to the rich, Northern Russian meat selections on the menu. The title also refers to the pen name of Igor Lotaryov, an early 20th century Futurist poet better known as Igor “Severyanin”. The literary reference is relevant to Severyanin’s location in the city’s centre, among the enbankments, canals and facades that have inspired so many beautiful words. The restaurant is only minutes away from the Mariinsky Theater, but you can also find a love for culture inside: restaurateur Aram Mnatsakanov’s innovations include a new creative team, a fresh signature menu, a renovated interior and a calendar of concerts and poetry readings, Russian tea ceremonies, monthly children’s workshops and themed dinners. Severyanin is the perfect place for both formal and informal meals, lunch during a city tour or coffee and cake with a friend.

One of the best restaurants I've eaten in while in Russia. Excellent service and some delicious food - lots of Russian cuisine with a twist (i.e. made tasty). Slow cooked rabbit with ceps was a favourite while the homemade liquors made for an interesting end. The review doesn't mention that the complimentary water comes with cucumber in it. Could one hope for anything more?
