The Battle of Sutjeska in 1943 was arguably the battle that legitimised the Partisans in the eyes of the Allies, even if they suffered massive losses in comparison. The result of the battle was inconclusive, although the Axis failed in their aim of smashing the Partisan formations and eradicating Marshall Tito, who managed to get out of the battle thanks to a heroic intervention from a German shepherd called Luks. The battle has taken on mythical status in the decades since, and this monument was unveiled in 1971. A landslide damaged the monument in recent years, leading to a great drive to renovate and improve the entire site. The results speak for themselves.
