The exhibition displays about 50 items from the collection of the Novgorod Museum and St. Sophia Cathedral. Many of them have preserved traces of the dramatic events of those days – marking inflicted by the occupiers in the preparation of the transportation of items from Novgorod. A symbol of the tragic fate of cultural values during the war is the bronze bust of Leo Tolstoy, strewn with bullet marks. Tolstoy was turned in the target for shooting by occupiers. The exhibition also features ashtrays with inscriptions in German, made of gilded plating of the main dome of St. Sophia Cathedral.
The exhibition includes fragments of the ruined wall paintings of the Novgorod churches. The final section of the exhibition is devoted to the events of the last decades – the search and return of the missing Museum values.
