Victory Avenue

Linden-lined Aleja Zwycięstwa, which stretches from the old city to Wrzeszcz and in the past has gone under the names Grosse Allee and Hindenburg Allee must have been beautiful before it became a small dual carriageway. Traffic fumes and noise apart, it remains quite charming. The parks which lie either side of the avenue were cemeteries destroyed by government decree in 1965 as part of attempts to erase the memory of German Danzig from what was now Polish Gdansk. During WWII, the victors of the Battle in Gdańsk celebrated by taking pot shots at villas lining Aleja Zwycięstwa.
