Belvedere

  Prinz-Eugen-Str. 27      +43 1 79 55 70     more than a year ago
Named for the Italian phrase for “beautiful view”, the Belvedere palace complex was originally conceived as a summer country estate for Prince Eugene of Savoy, one of the most celebrated military heroes in European history. His impressive collection of artwork is displayed here, along with more recent additions from the royal Habsburg holdings. The Upper Belvedere’s major attraction is undoubtedly Gustav Klimt’s famous painting The Kiss, which can also be seen on countless scarves, mugs, posters and other trinkets sold by surrounding shops and street vendors. While most visitors skip the Lower Belvedere, its collection of curiously troubling Messerschmidt heads make the extra few euros for a combination ticket well worthwhile. To get here, take tram D to the Schloss Belvedere stop.
