Museum? What for?

This fascinating exhibit at the Asia & Pacific Museum examines the unique power of curatorship and challenges our eurocentric views. It ponders how the history of European art would have been influenced had works from the East been displayed alongside those of the West, and asks more broadly - what should be displayed in a museum in the first place?

The first part of the exhibition explores the history of modern museology in Europe by placing items from the collection of the Asia & Pacific Museum into 'classical' European museum displays alongside known western works. In the Interaction Room, visitors can inspect everyday objects developed by Asian and Pacific cultures. In the Contemplation Room, visitors are encouraged to reflect on their own perception of history and try to think of Europe as 'the rest of the world' for once.
