Uncensored. Polish Independent Art of the 1980s

Showcasing a broad panorama of artistic phenomena through which artists manifested their opposition to the Polish communist regime, 'Uncensored' presents the state of Polish culture in the 1980s. At the time, artists reacted very quickly to the introduction of martial law by the communist regime, boycotting the government’s cultural policy and refusing to appear on "mainstream" platforms. Instead, they exhibited independently, collaborating with the Solidarity trade union and other worker fraternities. They undertook strictly clandestine activities: designing and producing posters, leaflets, or pin-back. Exhibitions were low-key, taking place in private apartments, lofts, or directly in artist’s studios. 'Suitcase exhibitions' saw the small-format reproduction of an artist's painting, which were then transported in a suitcase to a private home where they would be put on a display outside the reach of the censors! On a larger scale, the independent exhibition movement soon found such a place in the Church, which opened its doors to artists without judgement in faith or the form of the presented works. The independent exhibition movement was a mass-scale and multi-generational artistic-cultural-political phenomenon that combined political dissent and religious-social reference with a creative quest for visual form. This diverse and multifaceted phenomenon, encompassing all artistic disciplines, is unique in European art history, with each work manifesting a sense that only independent culture is able to express the fundamental human experience that is the desire for freedom!
