Tunnel 'Harry'

20 Dec 2017
'Harry' was the nickname of the tunnel, running nearly 9 metres below the ground that the escapees successfully completed and escaped through. Today the entrance and exit of the tunnel are marked with commemorative stones and connected with a line of stones which show where the 102 metre tunnel ran plus where the staging posts, nicknamed 'Leicester Square' and 'Piccadilly Circus,' were located. These stones carry the names of all of those who escaped, with those who were killed later marked in black lettering. A guard tower had been reconstructed as well as a small section of fence to give you an idea of how far the escapees dug. Signs among the trees show how life looked as the area where the camp stood has now been reclaimed by the trees.
