Tis the season to be jolly and Advent in Zagreb is all about that! As you stroll through the city you’ll be delightfully overwhelmed by the scent of grilled sausages, hot jam donuts, traditional Croatian delicacies, plus hot chocolate, mulled wine and more. You’ll find that at most Advent locations you can pretty much eat, mingle, dance, and buy authentic souvenirs. Rest assured as we have provided you with all the finer details for you to pick and choose what to do and where to go around town. 


Strossmayerov trg - ‘Fuliranje’ Fooling Around, December 1 2018 - January 1 2019
Action packed activities running day and night with over 40 restaurants serving specialties, not to mention stages with live acts and DJs, shops of sorts, a PS4 zone, Croatian craft beer, Santa’s home, and that is just the beginning.

Europski trg - December 1 2018 - January 6 2019
The walkway of the square transforms into a mini promenade of wooden houses serving liquors, brandies, and other throat warming remedies amongst a rich offer of concerts and alternative urban attractions.

Strossmayer Promenade - December 2 2018 - January 1 2019
Get the funicular up to the promenade where you can discover age old Zagreb with charming coffee houses, street food, dancers, bands, comedians, and thrilling views overlooking the city amidst shiny lights and joyful music. 

Varšavska ulica - December 1 2018 - January 6 2019
Another stop off where you can find handcrafted Christmas souvenirs, gifts, knitwear and more. Food is also in abundance with roasted chestnuts, pastries, cakes and mulled wine to devour. 

Bogovićeva ulica - December 1 2018 - January 6 2019
One of the busiest streets in town transforms into a stunning Christmas market and when nightfall comes, the lights will light your spirit up as vendors offer their majestic specials that range from décor to fashionable attire. 

Gajeva ulica - December 1 2018 - January 6 2019
The soft glow of Christmas lights are just as effective here as you can nibble on all sort of sausages made to family recipes with winter side dishes too. Pancakes are aplenty as well as spell bounding liquors. 


Ethnographic Museum - November 24 2018 - January 15 2019
From Christ’s manger to Christmas decorations never seen before, see the works of Sister Samuela who uses natural materials to make some amazing religious figures and sculptures.

Croatian History Museum - December 1 2018 - January 6 2019
Attend workshops tailored to making Christmas ornaments and nativity scenes whilst visiting the museum where you can make your own piece of history. 

HDLU - HPB Cash and Carry - Christmas market, December 17-23
Organised for young art students from  Croatia and Široki Brijeg on order to present their works. This is your opportunity to pick up some art from artists whose time is yet to come,  at great prices, and there by support them financialy.

The Nutcracker – The world resounding fairy-tale ballet by Tchaikovsky is at this time of year most appropriate with some of the best known tunes in classical music.

The Advent program from the ‘Novi život’ (New Life) troupe, the oldest drama studio for the blind and visually impaired thrives in spirit, so come and give your support. Admission is free.

A New Year’s Concert with a Vienna at heart as the waltz, polka, and famous grand arias sung by well-known Croatian soloists make these evenings memorable.

This famous tale takes a slight twist as the young Marie and Fritz go on a majestic journey of fantasy thanks to the inventor Drosselmeier. The play is inspirational and tailored towards children of all ages.  

Mala Scena Theatre - Advent at Mala Scena, December 1 - December 23
Resounding theatre shows for children of all ages after which St. Nicholas or Santa Claus will arrive with their sleighs and bring plentiful cheer and gifts. 

Trg bana Josipa Jelačića - The Merry Christmas Tram
Hoot… Hoot… See Zagreb in all its glory in an enjoyable 25 min ride that takes visitors around town. The starting station is located on Ban Jelačić Square at the corner of Praška Street.

Maksimir Park - Advent in Maksimir, December 1 2018 - January 6 2019
Enjoy Advent amongst nature where there is a rich variety of quality educational and fun programs for children, along with a selection of offers for grown-ups. Great for a family day out plus a visit to the Zagreb Zoo!

The 80's Museum - Advent at the 80’s Museum, December 22, 23,  29 and 30
Do you love the 80s? Who doesn’t? See Zagreb in the 80s for the first time where you can also find something similar to your youth too. Whilst turning nostalgic, look out for Santa Claus who has the museum booked into his busy schedule. Keep track via social networks for the correct hours of his visit.

Bethlehem is at our very doorstep with members from the Cenacolo Community re-enacting the nativity scene of Jesus’ birth along with farm animals too. Perfect picture moments!  


Trg kralja Tomislava - December 1 2018 - January 6 2019
Advent can’t pass by without a skate on the huge ice rink set up next to the King Tomislav statue. When night falls, the colourful lights and serenading music truly make for a winter wonderland. Advent in Ogulin - With a ticket for the entrance to the Ice Park you can also experience Advent in the recently dubbed ‘Croatian City of Fairy-tales’. You even get a 40% discount for entry into Ivana’s Magical Fairy House. Or, if you are travelling to the town of Ogulin by train, be sure to keep your ticketsas the same discount applies. 


The Westin Zagreb - Zagreb Advent Run 2018, December 16, 10:00
Come dressed as Santa, an elf, or anything Christmassy at this fun run marathon that you can join. Choose from the 5km or 10km distance with all proceeds going to raising awareness for diabetes. 


In order to make this holiday season more pleasant and cheerful, we appeal to fellow citizens and our guests to use public transport as much as possible from December 2 to January 7. All rides are free on weekends in the city of Zagreb throughout this period. This display of goodwill starts from every Friday at 12 noon through to Sunday midnight. This includes the Zagreb funicular.
