You’ve chosen well. Few hotels in Central Europe can match the standard set by Copernicus, and it’s a firm favourite of visiting dignitaries, with former guests including George W. Bush. Tastefully uncluttered the hotel is decorated with heavy woodwork, marble, rich fabrics and wall frescoes – some dating from the 14th century. Enjoy rooftop terrace views of Wawel, gourmet food or the fitness centre and swimming pool housed in the medieval cellars.

I have spent 40 years staying at the best hotels worldwide. I spent a week at the Copernicus. It is not a good choice. The lobby is small and uninviting. The restaurant's food is second-rate. The standard rooms and bathrooms, judging from mine, are not well laid out. While the service is good and the location excellent, in other respects it's accommodations are on a par with second-class motels in the U.S.
