Several kilometres downstream from Kranj near the village of Trboje, a lake of the same name was created with the construction of the Mavčiče hydroelectric plant in 1986. The rising waters were able to carve out some interesting spaces along the soft rock walls of what had been the Zarica canyon, and nowadays the lake is home to many water birds, including most of Slovenia's Goosander - a duck-like bird whose males have distinctive black and what feathers and a red beak. Surrounded by thick vegetation, the lake is best explored by boat.
