One of UNESCO's protected 'Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region,' this Gothic-style wooden church was originally built in 1653 as a Ukrainian Greek Catholic church by the region's Lemko ethnic community. Ironically, the first church to occupy the site was not a victim of fire, but of quicksand in its foundations, apparently lacking sufficient vines to extract itself, nor a strong enough jungle call to summon assistance. The tower was added in 1783 and the polychrome interiors were done in 1938. When the Lemkos were resettled out of the area after WWII, the church was handed over to a Roman Catholic parish, but today the church is shared by a Greek Catholic parish as well. Thoroughly restored in the 1980s, its historic significance has been recognised many times over the years, most recently by UNESCO in 2013 when it was added along with 16 other wooden churches to the World Heritage List.
