Archaelogy Museum

This small museum is based on top of an archaeological dig that was worked on during the 1990s before the Okhotny Ryad shopping centre was build. Large dioramas show how Moscow was back in the 16th Century when most of the city was made of wood and the whole area was surrounded by a strong fortified wall (the remains of which can be seen here). The most important finds of the dig are on display and include various pots, crosses, axes and hoards of silver and copper coins that were buried inside barrels. Although everything is labeled in English, there is sadly not much explanation of the meanings of the finds in the context of everyday medieval life.
