Budapest`s Jewish community originally centred on Castle Hill and later gravitated towards Óbuda. Jews were prohibited from living in Pest until the 18th century, but it was there that most of them finally settled. By the 1930s Jews made up about 20% of Budapest`s population. Most of Budapest`s Jews survived the Holocaust - unlike their counterparts in the provinces.
