Hidden away in the old town, this gem of a church comes as a surprise to those who stumble across it. After a short climb up from the port, the narrow alleyway suddenly opens out into a remarkably lovely piazza in front of the church. Originally an early12th century Romanesque structure, it was entrusted to the Dominican Order in 1442 by Pope Eugene IV and has been in their capable hands ever since. As well as the church, the cloister, the Loggia and museum are open to the public and all worth a visit. There are now numerous artworks (mostly by 17th century artists, Carlone, Maragliano, Parodi) inside the church itself but even more intriguing are the frescoes. Make sure you ask to see the Annunciation by Jos Amman von Ravensburg (1451) and the Loggia chapel. Sunday Mass at 11:00 and 18:30.
