What began in 1895 as a shop selling oysters, lobsters and caviar evolved into the grand Dikker en Thijs Fenice Hotel, which now provides 42 luxurious rooms in the heart of Amsterdam. Every room is equipped with the usual amenities like coffee and tea sets, flat screen TVs and huge bathrooms and many offer great views of the adjacent canals. Its close proximity to Leidseplein means that getting a good night's sleep can be a chore, but some rooms have been upgraded with double glazed windows to reduce the noise of revellers outside. Although difficult to pronounce, this renowned Amsterdam institution is a great place to experience the grandeur of this beguiling city.
