Amsterdam

Heineken Hoek

Although it’s grand in both size and location, this massive café is actually quite casual and relaxed. A simple menu of breakfast food, sandwiches, big salads and some typical mains is on offer as well as a children’s section that includes pancakes and spaghetti. In the evenings the place is packed for the cocktail hour and it’s difficult to get a seat here at the weekend, especially on the terrace in the summer.

Don't go there

If you want to be treated rudely by one ignorant waitress in particular, you are welcome to try it, bit I would not recommend it. We sat there 20mins waiting attention. It wasn't that busy at the time and couples who came in after us were promptly served while we got short shrift from her when we enquirer if we could order. When she did finally come to us after taking another couples order first when they had just arrived, there was no apology for the delay. We then waited for our drinks which she served to the other couple, and when we intervened to get them, she slammed down the glass of probably house wine when i had ordered the Merlot, and if looks could kill! We then waited for a further 30mins with nothing while all around us got served. When I caught her eye to ask if our order was forthcoming, she just said steely eyed "it's coming!" Without checking or apologising. Now the place was pretty full but they were all getting served so I got up to leave telling her it was unacceptable. She asked me. What the order was and I said that she should know. She then said "sweetie, we are busy" which they were not when we had arrived 40mins ago. After asking her NOT to call me 'sweetie' she shouted "just go!" So we did! What a way to run a restaurant. Was she having a bad hair day or what?
