Het Dolhuys

  Schotersingel 2, Haarlem      (+31) 235 41 06 70     more than a year ago
Without a doubt, Haarlem’s most entertaining museum is Het Dolhuys. From 1550 - 1850, the building had in fact been a Dolhuys, which is an old Dutch word for mental hospital. Since 2005, the national museum for psychiatry has been housed here and its exhibits are displayed throughout the historic building. It's a vibrant and active place where you can check out former patient’s cells, listen to stories of mental illnesses, view ancient psychiatrist’s tools, learn about the history of psychiatry and even test your own mental health. Explanatory texts of the main exhibits are only available in Dutch, but translations in English, German and French are readily available at the reception. You’d have to be crazy not to visit this place!
