St. Pancras' Church

  Sloterweg 1184 ,   Nieuw-West          (+31) 206 15 38 63     more than a year ago
Ever since a miracle occurred in Amsterdam, Sloten became the starting point of a pilgrimage to the city that followed the Sloterweg. The miracle happened in March 1345, when a dying man was given a piece of communion bread during the ritual of the Eucharist and afterwards vomited up the host. His vomit was thrown in a fireplace but the host was miraculously retrieved from the fire in one piece. The Catholic Church named this event the Miracle of the Host and it is still celebrated today. At the time, the former Sloterkerk dedicated to Saint Pancras marked the beginning of the pilgrimage until it was converted into a Protestant church after the Reformation. Sloten’s current Catholic church was built in 1901 in a sober neo-Gothic style and serves a small Catholic community. St. Pancras' Church is closed to the public except during masses.
