The Van der Pek neighbourhood is probably the best example of the genuine old Amsterdam-Noord, which is now emerging as a popular place to live due to recent renovations. Although a stone house with a garden in the middle of a city seems like a rather standard situation today, a 100 years ago this definitely wasn't the case. On the pretext of creating a green environment for every worker in the rapidly expanding shipbuilding industry, small garden villages were built by the city. The tiny one-storey homes with private gardens are now once again in demand and the neigbourhood is a perfect place for cyclists.
