On the site of the local salt company, where each year in the region of 40,000 tons of salt are won from the sea, you will find locals bathing in the lye pools and therapeutic mud throughout the summer months. Why not go along and join in? The salt pans (which gradually get redder and redder as the process of crystalisation takes place) are located on the southern side of Lake Atanassov.
First bathe in the lye pools - then cover yourself in the black mud,let it dry and finally go wash off in the sea! The perfect beauty spa ;-)
You can get there by car by following the signs to 'solnitsi' before reaching Sarafovo from Burgas or by taking a cycle ride along the beach from Burgas. There are a couple of small cafes there and the annual Salt Festival (usually held in August) is growing in popularity. Admission is now being charged to the pans but it is very reasonable and improvements have been made for tourist access. Don't take your best swimsuit and take care on the steps as they are slippery.
Not recommended for children under 12 althoughg admission for children under 7 is free.
