History of Genoa FC Museum

  Via Al Porto Antico 4      (+39) 010 553 67 11     more than a year ago
Shrine to Italy’s first football team, officially called Genoa Cricket and Football Club. The name in English harks back to 1893 when the team was founded by an English doctor, James Spensley, and the supporters are still fiercely proud of its origins. The museum has been completely renovated and is now handily placed in the expo area so you can combine a visit with other Porto Antico attractions.
Inside, 10 interactive rooms take you on a chronological trip through the history of the club from Spensley to the present day. All sorts of footy memorabilia are on show and will delight football fans anywhere, regardless of their personal loyalties. You can see the ball used in the first ever Italian championship back in 1898, original first strips, and shirts worn by its most famous players and models of the Ferraris stadium. Old black and white footage is shown next to high-tech 3d films and videos with many interactive touch screen opportunities. The new museum also has an excellent shop to stock up on merchandise if you want.
The team’s performance has seen many ups and downs over recent years but its supporters are known as being amongst the feistiest in the country and stick proudly by their heroes through thick and thin. You’ll no doubt notice their red-blue flags with the yellow griffon waving from balconies around the city… as you’ll probably notice the flag of their arch rivals Sampdoria!
