St Francis' Church (Chiesa di San Francesco)

St Francis' church and convent was first documented in 1252, but was rebuilt in a neo-classical style between 1835 and 1847 and that is the structure we see today. From the 14th until the 19th centuries, it was a very important meeting place for the giudicato of Arborea and saw many important political and religious events take place within its walls, including the signing of the peace treaty between Eleanor of Arborea and the Aragonese King John I. Within the church’s baroque interior lives the famous wooden sculpture of the Crucifix of Nicodemus, a 14th century carving considered to be one of Sardinia’s most important works.
