Malbork railway station ranks as one of the town’s best preserved and oldest buildings. Completely renovated in recent years the building dates from 1891 and features beautifully restored ceramics in the extremely elegant ticket hall.

While the station dates from the end of the 19th century, the railway arrived in the town as early as 1852 from the town of what is now Braniewo on the border with the Russian Oblast of Kaliningrad. For a number of years previously there had been plans to connect Berlin with Konigsberg (now Kaliningrad) as part of the Royal Eastern Railway network and work had even begun on the bridge over the Nogat, though economic and political unrest in Prussia saw this work suspended.

Berlin was eventually connected to Konigsberg via Malbork in 1857 and the town grew into an important junction over the following decades. In 1891 the new station, built in the Old-German style, was unveiled and the renovation captures the atmosphere of the old station very well. Note the ceramic floors and the stained glass windows depicting the coats of arms of surrounding cities. The train station was one of the few buildings to escape damage in the maelstrom of 1945 though a fire set by some renegade Red Army troops was fortunately caught quickly. Much of the building’s interior survived although a point of interest is the Polish coat of arms over the ticket office which was painted to cover the Prussian coat of arms that had been there.

Taxis and a bus stop can be found directly outside, while the main street, ul. Kosciuszki, is less than 10 minutes walk away. It’s here that you’ll find the main city tourist information point and this should be your first point of call to pick up leaflets, maps etc. for your visit. The castle is a further 10 minute walk from there.
