The Dutch are master multitaskers and the spacious De Ebeling, located in an old bank building, is the perfect example of this. Part classic brown bar and part restaurant/cafeteria, it also hosts the occasional club night. You can enjoy a cheap daily special or one of its other simple, yet tasty meals in stylish, industrial surroundings where fresh flowers are placed in empty Belgian beer bottles to decorate the tables. The terrace with views of busy Overtoom is often occupied by local hipsters as well as elderly Amsterdammers who both enjoy the pleasant atmosphere. Don't forget to visit the toilets downstairs, which are among the safest in the city as they're located inside the old bank's huge safe. Try the Mokums pekelvlees, a baguette with grilled meat and sour extras, which tastes much better than it sounds.
