Not unlike the six islands that form the Dutch Caribbean, Suriname also has a special historical link with the Netherlands. This South American country enjoys as much cultural diversity as Curacao and this is naturally also reflected in its cuisine. Just opposite the Plasa Bieu market, you'll find De Ruyter where Indonesian, African, Indian and Caribbean flavours have been perfectly combined in tasty dishes like roti (unleavened flat bread), rendang (slow cooked coconut beef stew), pom (chicken casserole) and heri heri (island fruit casserole). All meals are made to order, so take your time and enjoy some people watching. It's down-to-earth service and reasonable prices makes this one of our favourite eateries in downtown Punda.
