The district of Pietermaai has been transformed into a trendy neighbourhood over the past decade, although most locals remember this part of town as a neglected ghetto. The area still has its rough areas, but since the artists have moved in it's only a matter of time before it becomes gentrified. You'll find a handful of murals commemorating the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery on the Pietermaaiweg and Nieuwestraat.
