Great Bay starts where Philipsburg meets the sea. The wide crescent bay is the cruise ship gateway to St. Maarten, which is probably why this family-friendly beach is all gussied up with swaying palm trees and a boulevard-style boardwalk full of restaurants, shops and bars. The beach is great for kids, although the sand includes billions of tiny shells, which makes it uncomfortable to walk on.
