If you're sick of all the jewellers and duty free shops that have a strangle hold on downtown Philipsburg, head down to this charming little gem that provides a fairly complete overview of St. Maarten’s history with exhibits, models and dioramas. Learn about the early inhabitants of St. Maarten, local culture, the 92 plantations that once operated here and the abominable slave trade, the fascinating geology of the island and the destructive powers that made St. Maarten what it is today. The exhibit dedicated to monster Hurricane Luis that ravaged the island in September of 1995 is particularly moving and the Hall of Fame, which consists of pictures and profiles of 'national heroes' is also worth a look. The little gift shop offers a welcome break from typical island souvenirs especially the maps, books and locally made prints.
