Paushuize (Pope House) is a Renaissance building with Gothic influences and its name comes from the Holland's only pope: Adrian VI. The religious leader had this house built in 1517, even though he never lived there himself. For centuries it was a governor’s residence and today it has mostly a representative function. A house that is as great and old as Paushuize naturally carries a plethora of wild ghost stories. One staircase in the cellar leads to a closed wall. The story goes that the soul of Hortense, wife of King Louis Bonaparte, lives behind this wall and sometimes comes out to haunt the building. The combination of red brick and lighter natural stone, as well as the striking stepped gable, make this historic building noteworthy.
