Soestbergen Cemetery is one of the oldest and most beautiful graveyards in Holland. For his inspiration the architect chose the English country style, which is defined by swaying paths, diverse vegetation and unexpected vistas. This causes Soesterberg to exude a romantic atmosphere with a unique circular barrow at its centre. Many well-known Utrechters, including wealthy traders, doctors, lecturers and bishops, are buried here. The best known grave is undoubtedly that of Gerrit Rietveld, although this world famous architect's last request was to be buried next to his mistress in Bilthoven. His children later had him exhumed and reinterred here.
