Dutch Catholics have revered the so-called Holy Heart of Christ since the 13th century, but for some reason hundreds of years later in the late 1800s and early 1900s this practice reached a fever pitch when countless statues of the 'holy heart' were erected all over the Netherlands. Eindhoven was no exception and a few of these, including the one at the top of the picturesque Paterskerk dating from 1898, sprouted up in the city. Locals have ironically given the 5m-tall, 800kg statue the nickname 'daredevil Jesus' which refers to its precarious position 60m above the ground. Although it’s beautifully lit at night, it’s nearly impossible to spot the bullet wounds he received during WWII.
