Battery de Windt

Whitewall Road, St. Eustatius     more than a year ago
There aren't many forts in the Caribbean that are this well maintained as this Statian landmark. Battery de Windt was abandoned in 1815, but its stone walled battery was an important defensive structure for Statia since its completion in 1756. You’ll find two rusty canons at the end of remote Whitewall Road to the southeast of Oranjestad. The views are breathtaking from the top of the cliff where you can easily spot St. Kitts and if you’re really lucky a water spout from a whale can also be spied from time to time. A small information plaque is available, but you'll usually only have goats for company at this remote location.
