Sint-Maarten

Fort St. Louis

Marigot, St. Maarten     more than a year ago
The only remaining fort on the French side of the island overlooks picturesque Marigot Bay. Reaching the few remaining remnants, consisting of neglected outer walls that have seen better days and some historic cannon, isn't an easy task, but the steep climb is well worth your sweat and tears, especially if you arrive at sunset. The unathletic can avoid the long trek by driving to the top of the hill and then walking the last part. The largest historical monument in St.Martin is named after a French king and dates back to 1767. Informative plaques provide plenty of historical background information.
