The unique buildings of
De Uithof reflect the changes in Dutch architectural development over the last 45 years. The 1960s saw the rise of brutal concrete giants representing an uninhibited belief in progress, while the 1970s illustrated an increasing struggle with future uncertainties. After a period of master planning during the 1980s, a new generation of buildings came into being and a number of ambitious and renowned architects transformed De Uithof into a showcase of modern architecture. The Uithof university grounds are now a popular venue for architecture tourists from all over the world. In short, it's an excellent example of high-profile modern architecture in the Netherlands and due the abundance of students, it's also gaining a reputation for its nightlife scene.
