The palace and park ensemble Alexandria was a favorite summer vacation spot of four generations of the Romanov dynasty. It adjoins to the eastern border of the official emperor's residence. The parkland was named after Alexandra Fedorovna, the wife of Nicholas I. The emperor commissioned Adam Menelaws, a Scottish architect and landscape gardener, to create an English-style estate with a "cottage" palace and home-farm. These days, one does not need to be a royal to enjoy the parkland around the palace: today, Alexandria is a beautiful place for family getaways thanks to various playgrounds, festivals, interactive programs, historical reconstructions and plenty of opportunities for walking around one of the most beautiful suburban parks of the country.
