Aglio Olio & Peperoncino

  Porinou 13, Makrigianni      (+30) 210 9211801     more than a year ago
A lovely trattoria with a warm atmosphere, serving all the classic Italian dishes plus some daily specials. Well hidden on a backstreet of the Makrigianni area, it’s actually very easy to find: once you’re out of the Acropolis metro station, through the ‘A. Diakou’ exit, turn right into Porinou Street and you're there.

At the last time we were in Athens, I am an ex-prof chef & restaurant owner so super critical about food, surroundings and service. The staff were attentive but overly so, for once in Greece I found the lighting in such an establishment to be correct, and the food a taste of rustic Italian - fantastic. A real find in a city where, apart from a few exceptions, the menus can be repetitive.

Terrible food, average decoration, overpriced, slow but kind service. Overall, really bad value for money... There are definitely better places to dine.. I would not recommend it.

You MUST dine here while in Athens. The food is incredible and affordable (39 Euro for two people to dine with appetizers and a bottle of wine), and the staff is the most welcoming I have ever met. They don't have an English menu, but the very friendly waitstaff speak flawless English (and apparently some other languages) and cannot wait to explain the menu to you. Vegetarians will be thrilled to find nearly all the dishes are meatless. The kitchen opens at 8 and the place starts getting packed around 9:15, so arrive early for a choice table.
