Fountain Estate Walking Tours

As the last Protestant working class area on the city side of the River Foyle, the relatively small Fountain Estate (c. 500 residents) has a sense of community as palpable as that of its Nationalist neighbours. And to underline this point, residents have put together these enlightening walking tours highlighting the history and spirit of the area.

Nestling beneath the city Walls, the Fountain contains many interesting landmarks. Local trained tour guides will tell you all about the murals, Heritage Tower, Garden of Remembrance and 'Apprentice Angel' sculpture that symbolises the Apprentice Boys' locking of the city gates during the 1689 Seige of Derry. Look out for the large key on the back - moulded from the original key used in the Seige and which is on display in the nearby St. Columb's Cathedral. All in all an interesting segue into a little-explored part of the city.
