Considering Belgrade spent five centuries under the Islamic fist of the Ottoman Empire, it is either very surprising or entirely understandable that just one mosque remains from those times. Bajrakli Mosque is thus the centre of modern day Islam in Belgrade, a fairly unassuming structure in Dorćol that seemingly comes out of nowhere. It is named after the flag that was once raised to initiate the beginning of prayers in the city, although today that flag heralds worship in one mosque as opposed to nearly 300.
