Bektashi pilgrimage

25 Aug 2025
For one week in late August each year, the Muslim Bektashi sect in Albania embarks on a pilgrimage to Mount Tomorri near Berat. Bektashis from all over the world come to commemorate Abbas ibn Ali, who died at the battle of Karbala. This being Albania, the pilgrimage is inclusive, and locals of all religions and no religion make their way up there. From 20-25. August, expect thousands of pilgrims to visit the Bektashi tekke high up on the 2,379-metre-high mountain for prayers, festivities, and a mass picnic with some music and dancing.
