A blink and you’ll miss it monument to love in the centre of town. Safikada’s tomb lies opposite the Kastel Fortress, and you can be forgiven for asking just who this Safikada was. Her story is a typically tragic one, that of a young girl in love with an Ottoman soldier, a love that her family simply couldn’t allow. Her beau soon died in battle, leaving our young heroine utterly heartbroken. She put on her wedding dress and waited by the cannon that announced noon on a daily basis, standing in front of it at the last second and bringing her own life to a close. Her grave has since become a pilgrimage for lovers worldwide.
