The largest mosque in Herzegovina, the Karađoz Bey Mosque is another marvel of 16th century Ottoman architecture. That man Mimar Sinan was the brains behind it and the great architect’s fingerprints are all over the building, although not literally. It was an important place of worship from the 16th to the beginning of the 20th century, but the wars of latter saw it suffer greatly. It was practically flattened during the last war, but was renovated extensively in 2002 and restored to its Classical Ottoman glory. The massive dome is particularly impressive, as is the typically elegant minaret.
