The cross marks Romania's Greenwich - the spot from where all the distances to other Romanian cities are measured. Next to it is a memorial to Cristian Paturca, best known as the man who wrote Imnul Golanilor, the song of Romania's student revolutionaries of April, May and June 1990 who tried and failed to bring down the Ion Iliescu regime.
