Barka Saffron

  Str. Av. Sănătescu 1 ,   Aviatorilor          (+4) 021 224 10 04     more than a year ago
We have been coming here since the last century, when there was precious little choice in Bucharest for people wanting something a little different; a little more spicy. Now there is plenty of choice but we still trot up to Barka whenever we can. On our last visit we went for the lamb with spinach in tomato sauce which was as good as we had hoped. The onion bhajis remain Bucharest's best. First class cocktail list, and regular live music and arty events. Also of note is that the owner has his own buffalo farm in Transylvania, and sells fantastic fresh buffalo telemea cheese here at the restaurant.

I have visited Barka saffron twice in past week (6th and 13th of November) and I cannot recommend it enough! There is a new head chef and a new menu. The food was delicious (starters were especially excellent) as well as the Indian and International meals.Service was also to a very high standard. To all of you who have written Barka Saffron off. Try it again, it is really worth it! trust me!

I have no idea why this restaurant is doing in this list... It is a laugh. Honestly, I ordered a chicken tandoori and it had NO TASTE at all. Samosas were also disappointing. The place is too dark and has no charming at all. No wonder the place was empty. I just waste my night in the city.

Terrible-the waiter served me chicken instead of paneer even though I specifically told him I was vegetarian. He simply shrugged and said "So what-so I made a mistake-it happens." Next time round, he brought me the wrong paneer dish-not the one I ordered. He then had the audacity to ask if I was sure this time! When I got mad, he told me not to shout and accused me of spitting on him. There was no manager around. There were three disinterested kids as waiters who were rarely around. One had to go and find them when one wanted something. Finally, they don't accept American Express. Highly avoidable place. (Visited on Aug 7, 2010)

One of my worst dining experiences - tonight, in a half empty restaurant with bad food, bad service (with the outstanding exception of a teenage-looking waitress), and a toilet out of order since last week. A shame really - used to to like the place.

Barka Safron is indeed trying to succeed and succeeding! The informal, congenial atmosphere makes you feel very comfortable and welcome. We enjoyed a delicious array of curries which fed 5 of us for less than 300 Ron ... excellent value we reckon in this city. The service was excellent ... our waitress was knowledgable, responsive and informative. There is a wide selection of vegetarian dishes: we ordered dal, pakoras, paneer and samosas .. all very good and nicely complimented by a selection of pickles and sauces. Mains included chicken, which was "pretty good" and lamb which was voted as a standout by the carnivores in the party. The only disappointment was the Puri, which arrived looking a little flat and tired ... the Kulcha though was very good.We rated the experience 16 / 20 ... well worth returning to chase down the rest of the menu!

Strawberry daiquiris were off the menu ... but they now do a very fine banana daiquiri.
