City Park

District XIV     more than a year ago
Originally nothing more than a swampland, the City Park is today Budapest's largest park. One of its most notable features is Vajdahunyad Castle, an eclectic edifice that represents just about every kind of architectural style found in historical Hungary. The castle was built as a temporary structure for the 1896 Millenary Exhibition but proved so popular that it was later rebuilt in stone. Today it houses the Museum of Agriculture. In winter months the artificial lake turns into a vast skating rink. Not far from the lake is a statue of George Washington that survived the Cold War. Other attractions here include the Zoo (Illatkert) and the Amusement Park (Vidámpark). Petőfi Csarnok - a youth centre and concert venue - can be found in the park, as well as the Széchenyi Baths.
